What are Alpacas ?
Alpacas
are earth friendly, they browse on natural grasses without harming
trees or terrain.
Alpacas
are safe, easy to handle, they do not butt or bite.
Alpacas
are inexpensive to raise, requiring minimal feed, shelter,
fencing, or veterinary care.
Alpacas are not killed like other livestock,
instead they produce a renewable cash crop in the form of fiber.
Alpacas
are fully insurable against loss and come with reproductive
guarantees.
Alpacas
have tax advantages such as expense deduction, depreciation, and
the deferred recognition of accumulating wealth.
Lifespan:
20 to 25 years
Average
height: 36" at the withers.
Average
weight: 15 to 19 pounds at birth, they grow to 100 to 175 pounds,
less than 1/2 the weight of a Llama.
Average Gestation:
335 - 350 days and virtually never twin.
Birth:
Babies usually try to stand within 30 minutes and nurse within 1-2
hours. Birth almost always occurs between 9am and 2pm allowing
you to sleep comfortably through the night.
Breeding: Alpacas do not come into heat, but are spontaneous
ovulateors. This means that they only ovulate after breeding, thus allowing ranchers
easy control of the birthing season and planning for extended
vacations.
Colors:
Alpacas come in many colors, more than 22 natural variations and
blends. |
Alpacas are
raised for their soft luxurious fiber, which is shorn once a year and produces
enough raw material from each animal for several sweaters. The fiber comes
in 22 beautiful natural colors. Alpaca fiber unlike wool, contains no lanolin,
requiring no chemical scouring and is warmer, stronger and lighter than wool and
has a much lower 'prickle factor' than most wool products. Many people who
cannot wear wool can wear fine alpaca garments in complete comfort. Alpaca
garments are warm even when wet, which makes them ideal for outdoor activities.
Alpacas are
naturally clean animals, generally dunging in only one area of their enclosure
which they avoid for all other activities and often, stand in line to "take
their turn". Their manure is virtually odorless, and is a valuable and
easy-to-use fertilizer, requiring no composting.
They are
sociable, herd animals and should
not be raised in isolation.
Alpacas are sensible
and gentle with children making them a favorite for 4-H projects, pets and
therapy animals.
